This summer The Victoria TX Independent Film Festival is teaming up with Trinity to bring a 6 day DIY filmmaking course to Victoria kids ages 8-13.
Our incredibly inspired, DIY Young Filmmaker’s Institute, will start in the Summer of 2012. Our program is designed to inspire young people, ages 8-13, to find their creative voices. We will teach our aspiring young filmmakers to utilize the tools that are available to them, and not let their vision be limited by perceived costs. Our program teaches them to focus on how they can be successful by implementing the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) philosophy used by independent filmmakers.
Our last workshops were held on the sets of, The Pyrex Glitch (TPG) and Roundball. TPG was shot over the course of 3 days in Victoria, TX. Our festival staff and local DIY crew built a space ship inside of Office Systems Center using old copier parts and green screen paper. Our production crew worked in collaboration with Theatre Victoria’s Technical Director, Michael Teer, Amanda Rocha (lighting), Laura Klimist (costumes) and L-Ann imaging (still photography) to create a super surreal spaceship atmosphere. Guest SFX make-up professional, Krystal Phillips, instructed aspiring local make-up artists to help bring the characters to life. The team worked several 15 hour days to make the shoot as incredibly successful as it was.
Summer of 2011 was our second workshop. It took place on the set of a feature film directed by TACA’s Director of Education, Elizabeth Spear. We worked closely with the Art League and put kids to work designing the set for the movie. 40 kids showed up for 2 weeks and made posters and painted to receive a film crew credit, and then were featured in several scenes from the movie to earn a true acting credit for their resumes.
Our workshops epitomize what DIY filmmaking is all about- using the tools you have, implementing creative problem solving skills and maximizing a minimal budget to achieve your vision. We will offer classes in camera operation, video editing & sfx make-up.
